Packed with effigies and memorials thought to have begun after an uprising against the Russian Empire, Kryziu Kalnas plays home to nearly 100,000 crosses and represents one of Lithuania's most well-known sights. Bulldozed several times by Soviet authorities during their rule over the country, the hill has come back to life in the decades since Lithuania's independence. Visit the hill and wander the wooden pathways winding around the mound and you'll be surrounded by crucifixes of all sizes and styles. Don't miss taking an up-close look at the thousands of types of crosses carpeting the area; often larger ones are covered in hundreds of smaller examples attached with strings, rope, and rosaries. Feel free to add one of your own if you'd like to contribute to the hill's growth. Put Kryziu Kalnas at the forefront of your travel plans using our Jurgaiciai visit planner.

  • Visited this place in the winter and pretty much had the place to ourselves. A fresh snow covered the landscape and gave us a different view of what the average tour would see at this place.

  • This is one of those spot in middle of nowhere which will very surprise you. I can very recommend it. Scary but interesting. You can buy here your own cross( many types in offer) and you can leave it in this hill of crosses. Land around reminds me Montana in USA. Kind of farms land…
  • You can park at the souvenir/information place for 0,90€ (for car), but if you follow the road you can park for free even closer to the hill.😉 Beatiful place. The number of crosses will probably be around 200000 now, the previous number was from 2006. Kind of busy in summer, but still manageable. You can feel the strength of religious human race contributing to this monument. Each cross might have its own story.
  • Beautiful place. Once you get there you can buy small or a big cross to leave on the hill. They give you a marker pen if you want to leave a special message for a loved one on a cross. Highly recommended.
  • Walking towards the hill with the crosses vaguely showing in the horizon and step-by-step the emotions started to rise. It was such an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere was so spellbinding, captivating, leaving me in such a humble state of mind. The hill was literally covered in crosses from around the world, from every country you could ever imagine. It was so overwhelming. If you are thinking visiting this unique place, remember that you can bring your own cross too.
  • Day 15. A 300km drive day from Ukmerge Lithuania back to Riga in Latvia via a very quirky religious place called ‘The Hill of Crosses.’ A place of Catholic pilgrimage, there are over 100,000 crosses on this hill in rural Lithuania. The hill has come to signify the peaceful endurance of Lithuanian people despite the suffering they have endured over the generations.
