Located at the edge of old town Kaunas, Kaunas Castle represents a Gothic-style castle thought to have been built during the mid-14th century. The castle served as a strategic military outpost that guarded nearby cities and the roads between important trade routes. By the start of the 21st century, only approximately a third of the original castle remained intact. It was renovated in 2011, but some of the original walls remain. Climb the stairs to the upper levels for expansive views of the surrounding town and scenery. You can walk within the walls for free, or pay to go into the round tower where you'll find an art gallery. Plan your visit to Kaunas Castle and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Kaunas day trip website.

I very liked this castle. I don't know why others think that it is boring there. I think that it is worth to go there.

Walking to the end of the old town brings you out to Kaunas Castle. One can see pretty much all that needs to be and can be seen by walking around it.

Remains of a medieval castle, not much left but fixed up nicely. When we were there, there was two men dressed up as knights demonstrating how knights fought, very cool!

The castle at the confluence of the Nemunas and Neris rivers was built in the 14th century to defend against the onslaught of crusaders. This is not only one of the first stone castles in Lithuania, but also the only one that has two rows of defensive walls. A settlement that grew into the current city was created around the Gothic defences. Kaunas castle first mentioned in written sources in 1361. According to legend, Queen Bona Sforza’s troops mysteriously disappeared in the tunnels underneath. Although it was restored multiple times, the castle lost its importance in 1408 when Kaunas was granted Magdeburg rights and the life of the whole city moved to the Market (Town Hall) Square. The castle was home to a prison in the 16th century and the souls of the prison’s inmates have not found peace to this very day, haunting the castle still by night. At present, the castle is a Kaunas city museum branch and annual cultural events are held in and around it.

Very beautiful and scenic castle, and a nice location too! The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars, is because it is a smaller castle with not so much to see and do. I would recommend coming here!

Not the biggest or the grandest but worth a visit and it’s a nice historic bit of window dressing for the town.
-
