Create an itinerary including Gate of Dawn
The sole surviving example of the five gates that once ringed and protected Vilnius, Gate of Dawn represents the site of a Renaissance chapel and one of the main entrances to the historical city center. Originally built during the first two decades of the 16th century, the gates from outside the defensive city walls appear as an imposing and solidly built tower. On the reverse side, however, the gate frames an ornate church straddling the tunnel. Peer through the windows to catch a glimpse of the chapel within. Climb up to the chapel via the door located next to the gate to view an intimate prayer room complete with a gilded icon of the Virgin Mary, meant to bless visitors and travelers alike. Take note that Mary is depicted alone, rather than holding Jesus. To visit Gate of Dawn on your holiday in Vilnius, and find out what else Vilnius has to offer, use our Vilnius.

  • Definitely worth visiting. The location within the city wall above the gates and overall atmosphere gives a special feeling. Have been visiting Vilnius many times, but visited this place only...

  • A stairway to the side leads up to this alcove and it fits about 12 people...no photography allowed (even without flash). Unless you want to pray, I'd say skip it as there are tons of other churches....  more

  • The gates of dawn is fabulous from outside but go inside and it is beautiful, the icon is amazing. The church itself is stunning but unable to take photos. You must visit to see it’s beauty
  • My favourite location for spare moment of thought and peace. So much love through centuries. 5/5 , must go place in Vilnius
  • This was my first time at this Shrine. It is a very prayerful place, especially in the chapel if Our Lady. I like that she can see the holy image of Mary even from the street below.
  • Nice to see, I am sure for pilgrims it carries value, for an average tourist it's not too special but still good to visit, it's in a nice area.
  • Its enjoys plenty of good write ups , but I found this literal gate a little underwhelming. By all means enjoy the legends that some over enthusiastic guides will relate but its significance may escape many visitors. The area is packed with religious buildings which hold more interest so don't waste any time by hanging around fearing you have missed something.
