Housed in the former headquarters of the Soviet Union's notorious security service, KGB Museum (Genocido Auku Muziejus) documents the tactics of the secret police and memorializes the victims. Though Lithuania was a part of the USSR until its independence in 1990, its forcible incorporation into the country in 1940 led to a great deal of resentment and resistance against Russia. Visit the museum to see a multitude of exhibits displaying personal items of victims of the 50-year occupation who were killed in this very building. Don't miss the prison here, where many of the most ghastly abuses were carried out. Keep in mind that, due to the brutal subject matter, the museum may not be suitable for young children. It’s so hard to believe how it was only in the 90’s that the occupation ended. It’s sensitively put together and the horrors of the cells are laid bare. It’s scary to think how easily the country was.... more

Exposes the dark side of humanity and worth the visit. It's small, there's a lot to read, but some of it, as well as the basement, will shock you to the core.

I can't say enough good things about this museum. A person could definitely spend an entire day here, soaking up all of the history. The best word I can use to describe it is emotional. The museum itself is very well kept, clean, and the staff were very helpful and friendly. There is also a great selection of books that you can buy at the ticket sales window.

Really informative exhibition explaining the occupation of both the German and Russian army's. Graphic details about the atrocities committed so, not for the faint of heart. Much bigger than I expected it to be so, if you love history you could spend many hours and still not have read all the information. The KGB prison in the basement was terrifying but at the same time very poignant and explanatory of the daily struggles Lithuanians experienced during occupations. Well worth a visit.

Amazing museum! There is a former KGB prison downstairs and two large exhibitions upstairs. It offers many perspectives on the WWII and post-war era in Lithuania. The prison can be a bit hard to stomach for some, especially the torture rooms and execution chamber, but the authenticity is really captivating. The exhibitions upstairs are more accessible, and offer a lot of information with loads of text, so if you like reading all the signs you will spend a lot of time here. Nevertheless, there's a lot to see as well!

We liked the museum but the exhibits are in small rooms and that doesn't help when there's many people. So maybe go early? You must see the KGB prison: the pictures, the cells, the execution and torture chambers can leave you gasped for air.

Very interesting museum. The most thrilling and atmosphere part is basement where prisoners were kept. One of the most interesting aspects is that there are a lot of similar places still functioning in Belarus or Russia, so if you want to know what political prisoners have to deal with in those countries - just visit this museum. Also very interesting exhibition is located on 2nd floor where you can see the equipment that KGB used. Lots of devices like metal detectors and surveillance equipment.
