Create an itinerary including Majete Wildlife Reserve
Participate in the conservation of Malawi's wildlife while you tour the habitat at Majete Wildlife Reserve. As you explore the reserve with a guide, you'll learn how the endangered and threatened species that are cared for here get rescued and rehabilitated. Once a prolific wildlife refuge, the reserve's resources were all but used up by the end of the 20th. Thankfully, in 2003 a project to reintroduce animals into the wild commenced, and has since transformed the reserve into a haven for elephants, zebras, hippos, and many other rare animal species. For Majete Wildlife Reserve and beyond, use our Chikwawa online route planner to get the most from your Chikwawa vacation.

  • You must be lucky to see animals. Thick bush & the game drives are only for 2 hours. Not worth it at all. Authorities must offer longer staying hours in the park. Very Disappointing

  • With so many wild animals fearing for an imminent extinction, Majete National Park a successful attempt at making sure some of them are saved. They have the big five. I couldn't get to see any of them but it was evident they were there. We only managed to see some of the impala family and warthogs. The view from Dr David Livingstone's camp onto the Kapichira Barrage was awesome. The roads are amazingly good. The guides and rangers are very friendly and could tell us all about the park and its game. Hell, they even have some nice tales on how some of the animals got their names. The camps at Thawale Lodge were scary at first but we slept through the night without any issues. The food was great. The staff were friendly too. It is a great getaway. I was particularly interested in the floral composition of the view so you'll notice a lot more photos of trees than animals.
  • What a wonderful hidden gem of a wildlife reserve. Beautiful scenery of bushes, trees and rivers. And of course the Shire river, meandering along the reserve, on it's way from Lake Malawi to the Zambezi. Even in the water-rich and overgrown rainy season, when most animals are hard to spot, we saw hippo's, crocs, zebra's, elephants, sable antilopes, warthogs, buffalo's and reebok. Although we didn't find giraffes, on our last morning before we left, we had the privilege to encounter one of the 17 black rhino's in the park. What an experience! On our two day stay (night spent in comfortable tents at the excellent Thawale Lodge), we were accompanied by a very sociable and experienced guide from African Parks. What a joy to have all your questions answered, not only about all mammals and every little bird in view, but also about reptiles (the twig snake!), flowers and even insects. Thank you very much Liwonde! And thanks Roger for the great hospitality!
  • Really nice park, doable in one day. Lots of antilope species. Great to stay for longer time in the hideouts! Check the info center for recent spottings and the roadmap. Okt 2016 18 rhinos were in the park but they are hard to see.
  • Beautiful National Park, perfect place for a Safari drive and lunch
  • I was excited to be in only Malawian game reserve with the big five. experiencing Lions, Elephants, Hippos, Tigers and rhinos was just amazing. The interesting part of experiencing the part is that you guided by professional tour guiders. I was also enjoy camping with friends. Magete game reserve is a big deal forever!!!!
