International Slave Route Monument, while small in size, holds huge significance as a reminder of the price of freedom and the suffering endured by so many during years of this active slave route. Built on February 1, 2009 to commemorate the 174th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in Mauritius, the monument informs visitors of the role this small island played in the slave trade as a major stopover. One larger sculpture forms the center, surrounded by others symbolizing the various countries from which the slaves arrived or where they ended after transiting through the island. The structure stands at the foot of Le Morne Mountain and is a quick but worthwhile stop on your way to nearby beaches or a trip up the mountain. • A culturally significant monument to go visit, bringing awareness to the slave trade that happened long ago. Lots of parking across the road at the beach, it’s a 1 min walk. There are many beautiful art installations from around the world, with explanations in English and French. Also one of the best view of Le Morne mountain from inside the monument circle.
  • This is a monument to honor slaves who were traded at indian ocean countries past. There are sculptures from different countries each has a unique form and composition. You can take photos with Le Morne mountain also in this area. Entrance is closed at 4 pm.
  • Information about slavery in Mauritius. Some of them jumped from the cliffs to "freedom"
  • A must stop to learn the history and remember what happened
  • It hurt me to only award 3 stars, but we could only see it through the locked gate. The monument sits within a small park which is gated. We travelled around 2 hours from the other side of the island, but despite the information on Google telling us it was open, they had locked up and gone home early. Therefore we could not enter. We weren't alone, as someone else arrived just after we did and was equally disppointed.
