Create an itinerary including Citadel
Do some upscale shopping and admire the views at Citadel, a former military base set in an impressive location. Built during 1834 and 1840 when the land was under British colonial rule, the fort sits atop a hill, well positioned to spot incoming attackers and fires in the city below. Now offering extensive views of the port town and coastline, the citadel has been refurbished to provide a range of boutique stores within its iconic blackened brick walls. If shopping in historical monuments isn't your thing, history buffs will enjoy the canons, positioned authentically, and the neatly restored walls. • The Citadel of Port Louis is better known as Fort Adelaide. It is a fortification that was built from 1834 to 1840 on a hill facing the harbor. The ease with which the British captured the island of Mauritius in 1810 led the invaders to strengthen the island's defenses. The British rapidly built several forts, including Fort George, Fort Adelaide, Fort William and Fort Victoria. Only Fort Adelaide remains today. The Fort was originally built as a means to fortify the defense of Port Louis but was never used for that reason. It is now known as a famous spot for impressive views of the Capital. The Fort itself is an impressive sight. With the wall made of huge cut stones of basalt rocks, the Fort still holds some remnants from the past such as cannons. However, it’s now famous for the 360-degree view of the Capital offering a breathtaking view of the Capital from all the angles! Such as the China Town, Champ de Mars, and mountains all at one place.
  • It’s perfecto for beautiful views overlooking the Mauritian capital city Port Louis. I enjoyed walking up the stairs and exploring the fort. It is a quick visit for those looking to know more about the history of the British and their slavery regime practiced here at the fort. Other than that there isn’t much to do here.
  • Loved going to visit as part of our North Tour and it was all free to view. The view's from the Fort are amazing and we would definitely recommend that you take the time to do this.
  • Definitely worth a visit, it’s free to enter and there are some nice views of the city. The views of the mountain are a bit obstructed. There is plenty of parking, but I would suggest approaching from the Champs de Mars side. The road is wider
  • Interesting spot in Port Louis Old castle in the capital city Great views on the city and the port No entry fees Worth the visit!
