Create an itinerary including The Photographic Museum
Found in the heart of the capital, The Photographic Museum features a treasure trove of old cameras, lenses, and vintage prints. The collection includes a number of daguerreotypes, the precursor to photography as we know it today, that date back to the mid-19th century. The museum is large, but it holds a lot of intrigue, especially for those interested in the history of photography and the island itself; survey the display of photos from the island’s history for an invaluable insight into the historical makeup of Mauritius. • Awesome experience, we really enjoyed that, amazing people, who showed us the museum by their own and chatted with us as well. Thank you!

  • Amazing place. It is the collection of a lifetime which dates back in time. Devices were kept in very good condition to the point that some of them still works perfectly regardless of their age. We had the opportunity to use one particular device called stereoscope which gives the sensation of being emerged in a 3D environment. Entrance fee is affordable and we even had a guided tour with accurate explanation about the history of photography. I completely recommend
  • A gorgeous little spot with so much history! We were delighted to have a little tour by the owner herself- also so amazing to hear the story of how the collection came together, as well as a lot of really interesting information on how photography has developed over the years. Well worth the visit and came away with trinket or two!
  • We had a very quick walk, but we were impressed by the diversity in age and type of cameras. Highly recommend for any passionate photograph.
  • A very interesting and delightful experience, which I highly recommend. We were surprised with a personalized presentation from the owner Tristan Bréville, who was very informative. I was delighted to discover that the first photograph taken in the southern hemisphere was taken in Mauritius, just mere months after the rediscovery of the method of photography in 1839.
  • Was closed Monday 1:45 pm although it should be open till 3 pm...
