serves as a treasure trove of historic sites and monuments, set in a remote river valley surrounded by sloping limestone faces. Ancient fortresses and monasteries of Christian sects dating from the 10th to 14th centuries dot the valley, and were also carved into the limestone outcrops. The impressive cave monastery was carved into the rock in the 13th century by Orthodox monks, and was inhabited by the monks until the 18th century. Walk around this ancient site and take in the atmosphere of solemnity, climb the hill and the cliffs, and survey the valley below you.
