Visit the oldest pagoda in Bagan, Buphaya Paya. Legend says that the king, having destroyed gourds (an infectuous plant) from the riverbanks, built the pagoda in the shape of that plant to celebrate his achievement. Take a look at the bulbous shape of the gilded dome, and experience the view, since the temple overlooks the river. Today's pagoda represents a reconstruction from 1975; the original was destroyed in an earthquake. Buphaya Paya is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our , world travel planner Edition.

  • This is possibly one of the oldest temples in Bagan, built right next to the river bank. There is a white fortress and this pear shaped pagoda is on top of the fortress. Like other Bagan pagodas...

  • This pagoda is on the banks of the famous river of Bagan, which is irrawady. People often go for boat rides but we avoided.

  • Came here when big tower under maintenance, but nice view to the river!
  • It is a pagoda with a unique shape. The view of the river from this place is quite good.
  • Really nice place for sunset view
  • Skip the crowds quick and get down to the beach, hire a boat for a sunset ride in the Irrawaddy river. The view on both sides of the river is actually beautiful! The boat ride is nominally priced, yes do bargain hard.
  • Nice place, don’t need to spend much time there though. Great view, you can see the river or even have a walk there, there are stairs to the boats - they also offer tours. Nice to watch the sunset there, but you won’t be alone ;)
