Built at the end of the 11th century by the father of the Burmese nation, King Anawrahta, Shwezigon Pagoda represents a priceless reliquary and pilgrimage center for thousands of Buddhist devotees. The holy site enshrines a collection of sacred relics, including Buddha's collarbone, tooth, and emerald images imported from China. The cone-shaped pagoda with five terraces has endured many earthquakes and natural disasters throughout history, but it was restored several times and, until recently, reinforced with 30,000 copper plates for better protection. Head inside to witness the inscribed pillars, golden bell, shrines with Gupta-style statues of Buddha, and the hall of 37 nats (revered spirits). This pagoda is easy to find and walking distance if staying in Nyaung-U. Best to avoid the middle of the day visits as you are not allowed to wear shoes or sandals and the outside walking areas can.... more

Such amazing and beautiful Pagoda it was the first place I have visited in bagan after long trip by bus coming from yangon. As it's the most sacred and important Pagoda in bagan ( they explain to me its contain bone and tooth of Gautama Buddha) What is also make it special this amount of the gold the Pagoda completely gilded in gold ..can you believe that 😲😲 It's also one of the largest Pagoda in this area with 160 ft height..the best way to reach there to rent Scotter and by the way it's not far from old bagan it's about 4 to 5 km. In this place you will have penalty of nice locations to catch awesome pictures ..afternoon is preferred time. If you come bagan you have to visit or your trip will not be complete

The Shwezigon Pagoda or Shwezigon Paya is a Buddhist stupa located in Nyaung-U, Myanmar. A prototype of Burmese stupas, it consists of a circular gold leaf-gilded stupa surrounded by smaller temples and shrines. Construction of the Shwezigon Pagoda began during the reign of King Anawrahta (r. 1044–1077), the founder of the Pagan Empire, in 1059–1060 and was completed in 1102, during the reign of his son King Kyansittha.

The most golden coated pagoda in Bagan with a long corridor leading to the entrance. But u can skip the corridor by entering from the side of the corridor end before the pagoda entrance. Can’t climb up. Buddha statues are spread around the pagoda.
