Create an itinerary including Sulamani Guphaya Temple
Encounter a time-honored remnant rich in the country’s cultural heritage at Sulamani Guphaya Temple, an ancient Buddhist temple from the late Bagan building period. Constructed in 1183 by the industrious King Narapatisithu, the temple remains one of the most visited in the region. Translating literally to mean "small ruby," the temple’s name comes from a gem whose story is now told in the northern porch, where an inscription tells of how the King found a precious red stone at the site before starting to build the temple. Admire the delicate glazed terracotta brickwork depicting the life of Buddha as you explore the two-story structure, partly restored after the earthquake of 1975. Put Sulamani Guphaya Temple and other Bagan attractions into our Bagan trip planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • A beautiful, huge and very popular temple in this stunning and vast area. Get an old bicycle and just cruise around, admiring this spectacular place for day after day. Deep and rich sunsets after hot and dusty days are an experience not to be missed.
  • Big temple, free entrance ticket, good to spend time here, but we can't climb to temple to see sunset and sunrise anymore!
  • The wall paintings are awesome.
  • Sulamani Temple is a very popular place for tourists in Bagan, especially those looking for a sunset to remember. The temple at dusk reflects the reddish hues of the setting sun. The bricks of the temple become surrealistically saturated. Visit the temple, but also make sure to walk around it because the area is filled with smaller structures that are less known but definitely just as memorable.
  • This temple has some great paintings - well preserved. What was interesting to see was that there seemed to be two layers of paintings from different times - and some script as well. Detailed paintings of stories with boats and people - we didn’t have a tour guide so not sure of the story behind it - would recommend going with one for the full experience.
