Learn about New Zealand's rich history at Auckland Museum, serving as both a major cultural institution and a war memorial. Designed in the 1920s as a commanding neoclassical temple, this structure features an impressive copper dome, added in 2007. The ground floor, dedicated to the Auckland area's natural and military history, houses impressive displays of Maori artifacts, including a war canoe and a carved meeting house (which you can enter only after removing your shoes). The upper levels feature more military exhibits and a display about the region's volcanic fields, including a fascinating simulation of an eruption. For the sake of convenience, take a guided highlights tour, included in your admission ticket. Plan a Auckland trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • Got be one of the best places to take your kids for some fun, history and culture. Hours of fun for them. Though these days I prefer to relax at the Cafe or out side while the older kids explore. That said I do visit the new displays and exhibits. The Greek one was fascinating.
  • Please, promise me you will definitely visit Auckland War Memorial Museum when you are in town! Rich Maori culture and history Varieties of pacific culture and history Vivid war and history display A great introduction of how New Zealand is here today Reminds you to respect people and to love the world Informative and full of education How earthquake is happening, how animals are dying, how you can to do protect the earth.......... Promise me, visit Auckland War Memorial Museum when you are in town.
  • A wonderful museum and war memorial! Particularly enjoy all the amazing Māori and Pacific artifacts. What an amazing collection. I will definitely go back one more time before we leave New Zealand.
  • We had a few hours to kill before we had to head to the airport, and I wish we had more time here! Admission is FREE for Auckland residents and I believe there is a discount for New Zealand residents; international visitors have to pay but I was happy to do so and we got more than got our money's worth! Great place to spend the day and learn more about the history of Aotearoa and its people 😁
  • I've visited this museum around 10+ years ago and on my visit today it felt like there was more to see before. Definitely lots of things changed, some exhibitions became computerised, which to me is a bit sad, but inevitable with time and progress. Other things were greatly improved and made the museum look awesome. I'd like to see more on level 1 (the world), things that relate to New Zealand and over all hope that the museum will only get better with time.
