Create an itinerary including Toitu Otago Settlers Museum
Take a journey through the history of Dunedin, following its progress from the earliest communities to the modern city, at Toitu Otago Settlers Museum. The oldest history museum in New Zealand, it houses extensive collections of items that depict everything from the area's Maori culture and history to the inventions of the information era that changed everyday life in the city. The exhibits of arms, uniforms, and other items display the impact that global events such as World War I had on the area. A gallery proudly showcases the works of local artists who helped establish Dunedin as one of New Zealand's main cultural hubs. Admission to the museum is free and guided tours are available once a day at an additional cost. Plan my Dunedin trip by asking Klarna Trips to come up with tips and suggestions.

  • Great exhibitions, good balance between interactive and static parts, we actually came twice in two days. Pounamu at entrance is super cool!

  • I came here 8 years ago and am just as enthused as I was then, It is a fabulous museum about the history and people of the local region. I am again totally surprised at how large and how good it was.....  more

  • We left it too large in the day to visit so we had to rush our visit. We really could have spent much longer here. The cafe was also excellent, good quality coffee at a reasonable price.;

  • Excellent museum. I went to the museum with my family and we had a great time. It was a great way of learning about Otago history. There were a number of different sections. Very spacious and child friendly. I recommend 1-2 hours at a comfortable pace. Admissions by donations.
  • Quite fantastic insights into the history of New Zealand. Arranged in different areas, such as military, vehicles, immigrants, vehicles, technology and so on... It is great that not only very old things are shown but like a timeline the development from then to the recent past. Very friendly and helpful staff. I would write, it is worth the entrance fee in any case, but it is amazingly even free. Should not actually be missing on the program if you are in the area.
  • An excellent local museum that tells the story of the settlement of Dunedin from both the Maōri and Pakeha perspectives. The location in a former 1930s art deco bus station is amazing.
  • Free entry or entry by voluntary donation aprox $5-10 Well worth a visit Child and toddler friendly - lots of open spaces, cafe and kids area Very interesting history of the region and those who forged the land Highly recommend
  • A great museum that's free to view. It is big so allow at least a few hours!
