Create an itinerary including Waitangi Treaty Grounds
A significant slice of New Zealand's history, Waitangi Treaty Grounds commemorate the site where local Maori chiefs signed a historic treaty with the representatives of the British crown. Concluded in February 1840, the treaty recognized Maori ownership of their lands and granted them rights of British subjects. The agreement also established a British governor to administer the country. The grounds include a buidling erected in 1832 for one of the area's British residents, which today serves as a museum housing various historical exhibits and a copy of the original treaty. Get the most out of your visit by joining a guided tour, or attend a cultural performance of Maori songs and dances. A visit to Waitangi Treaty Grounds represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Paihia online attractions planner to plot your vacation.

  • This place is way too expensive. and we could leave the dog with our bicycles, tied up. So we gave up and cycled away.

  • WHY do I have to pay the double price as somebody from New Zealand?? Are they not interested in bringing the story to foreign tourists? I would have paid $30, that's a fair price, but I'm supposed to....  more

  • It was a lovely beach walk to this area from Pahia. It.is set in beautiful surroundings. However, on arrival I could not justify paying the two day entry fee as I only had an afternoon available.....  more

  • We last came over 10+ years ago and found so much has changed since. There is a entrance fee for Adults, but children are free. Show your NZ Driver's License to pay the NZ Resident price. The cultural show is totally worth it and we learnt a lot about the Maori culture. Lots of places to explore and the kids enjoyed answering the questions related to each place of interest
  • We're from Australia so found the guided tour and cultural experience excellent. Very interesting and entertaining with comprehensive knowledge shared by the guides. The cafe closes early so if you want food don't leave it until after 2.30
  • Partner & I visited Northland for a week from the lower North Island. Of course we had to stop at Waitangi because of its significance & ended up doing the tour. Our guide was fantastic. He was in depth but his delivery was not boring. We had a good bunch of people, majority from overseas who asked really good questions. This tour definitely made me reflect more than I have before. You can tell the cost of admission goes back in to the grounds especially with the amount of interactive stuff. I'd recommend doing a tour then going back through the museum, Maori Battalion & Busby buildings. There are stunning views at the grounds (we recommend driving up to top of the hill near the golf course after your tour too).
  • Scenic ground, with beach access. We could not get tickets as the place was all sold out but enjoyed the cafe. Prefect picnic spot. We will definitely plan to visit it soon again and hopefully next time with tickets booked in advance.
  • Amazing place! 30$ to get into the museum and surrounding area, it was totally worth it when I got to the Wharenui (Māori communal house) and experienced, for the first time, the traditional greetings and explanation of the culture. If you're in Paihia, definitely stop by. Amazing views of the ocean and a lot of history.
