  • We didn't know this is one of the LOTR site until we came here. The lookout to the waterfall is a short easy walk from the carpark. Breathtaking views all around. Highly recommended.

  • The view at the lookout is average and in Autumn there is basically no water flowing. Might have to check the falls out in spring melt?

  • Mangawhero waterfall is along Ohakune Mountain Road at about the 14km marker, on the right hand side. The walk is between 3-5 minutes to the lookout point. A handy spot to add to your itinerary on...

  • This was Gollum's Pool. Not for wheelchair nor walkers, steps were hard but well worth it to get the photos. I didn't go down to the bottom as way to steep but the view from the top was wonderful, good five minutes walk down.
  • A well made road side sight. Spent many a year travelling up up an down the mountain and have since now ignored it. Is is worth a stop and look at. A bit of a walk around an uneven path and you can get a good view of the top and bottom of the waterfall.
  • A beautiful waterfall at the mid-level towards Turoa Skifield from Ohakune. Be ware of the slippery walkway due to ice/snow. The waterflow is not volumetric as large part of it is still frozen as ice however the hanging of that over the Fall is fairly photogenic
  • It's only a very short walk from the carpark to these falls and well worth it. The snow-capped backdrop really adds to the magic of this truly beautiful location.
  • A great location with a short walk to reach some amazing views. Even the drive up Ohakune Mountain Road is gorgeous. I suspect Mangawhero Falls was not used for "Gollum's Pool" when filming the Lord of the Rings, but the stream just before the falls was definitely used to film the iconic scene in which Gollum chases a fish down running waters. This is a must-see for Lord of the Rings location-seekers on the North Island. Be very careful when exploring this area. Stick to the paths and stay behind the fences. The drops are quite sudden, and a fall could easily be deadly. But if you're safe - it's a beautiful view and iconic location.
