Create an itinerary including Cerro Negro Volcano
Trek up Central America's youngest volcano, Cerro Negro Volcano. Born in 1850, the volcano has erupted frequently over the decades since it first appeared, but tour groups run hikes up towards the crater during times of inactivity. The basalt cinder cone looks entirely at odds with the surrounding lush hillsides, giving the opportunity for dramatic photography. Make sure you bring lots of water on your hike up the volcano: it's hot, dry, and windy the farther you go on the 45-minute hike. The way down remains much simpler, whether you wish to walk or sled down the volcano. It couldn't be easier to arrange your visit to Cerro Negro Volcano and many more Leon attractions: make an itinerary online using Klarna Trips Leon trip planner.

  • We had a great time enjoying the beautiful views! The hike up is fairly easy and takes about +/- 30 minutes. Coming down is much quicker;)

  • Located a 45 minute drive outside of Leon the volcano of cerro negro has become synonymous with volcano boarding - an activity where one slides down the gravelly/sandy side on a plank of wood...

  • Once in a lifetime adventure. Cool, competent guides. Felt safe the whole time. There were backpackers, families with young kids and even an elderly man doing the volcano boarding so anyone can do...

  • Beautiful Volcano. Took us 30 minutes to get up there, awesome view. The ride down was also fun to do
  • One of the most spectacular views you can get in Nicaragua. I highly recommend taking a sledding tour of the mountain. The views at the top are worth it and then the adrenaline rush sliding down the volcano is just the icing on the cake.
  • The only place to do volcana boarding. The hike is approximately 45 minutes, a good shoes is recommended and you'll need a guide. It looks scary but it is not. It is almost 700m of sliding down and around 45 degree steep.
  • Volcano boarding. Not as scary as it looks, but a good hike to get up there. Hike up over an hour and board down in less than a minute. Many tour guides in Leon offer volcano boarding for about the same price. Stay hydrated. Once in a lifetime opportunity.
  • We toured on Cerro Negro with the company Volcano Day. The took us there in a Jeep and explained to the group the formation of the volcano. They also gave us a board to go down the volcano and it was fun! All of this for only 10$US and they also took pictures and offered a beer. The only bad point I found is the group (around 20 people) is a little bit crowded for such an activity. Still, it was nice and it's accessible to everyone since the volcano is really small.
