Create an itinerary including Fredriksten Festning (Fredriksten Fortress)
At Fredriksten Festning (Fredriksten Fortress), view the remaining fortifications of the hilltop walled city that has played an important role in Norwegian military history. Built in 1661, the fortress was often besieged but never defeated, which is a point of pride for Halden residents. Most notably, Swedish king Charles XII was shot here in 1718. Climb the ramparts for great views over Halden, the harbor, and the fjord running between Norway and Sweden. Visit the museum within the walls, which displays various political and military history exhibits. You'll find various eateries inside. Keep an eye on small children, as there are no railings or ropes guarding the drop-offs. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Halden holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Fredriksten Festning (Fredriksten Fortress) and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • One of the most interesting fortresses i visited, and probably one the highest. A rather steep climb up, but worth it.

  • A fine and interesting place, but too much noise from constant lawn mowing and use of an extremely noisy grass trimmer while we were there. It prevented us from seeing everything as we did not stand.....  more

  • A fantastic old fort with an exciting history. The view over Halden town is absolutely stunning. A wonderful and great place to spend many hours. Both food and ice cream can be bought at the good restaurants in the area, or the packed lunch can be enjoyed at one of the many beautiful viewpoints.
  • Halden 🇳🇴🏞🏔🗺- The Fredriksten fortress covers an extensive area of 2,000 square meters (21,528 square feet) and contains storehouses, powder houses, bastions, and deep passageways. The fortress has 3 freestanding forts: Gyldenløve, Overberget and Stortårnet. Great place although you have to climb slowly to the top ;D
  • Amazing place, full of history! Beautiful nature! You can explore fortress by yourself, but be aware of ghosts! 😉
  • This place is cool and you can see overview of village and you can learn history in everywhere. You can bring camera and enjoy with view.
  • Good to spend an out or two or to have a (family) picknick. Entrance is free, you only have to pay if you like to visit the museum (adult 90nok, kids 50nok if I remember correctly). Nice views over the city. Outside is a nice cafe with playing ground. You should make at least a quick stop if it's on your way.
