  • Honestly, this is just a very small (3 meters) memorial pillar. Nothing special about it, and it is very far away from the city center. Not really worth it I say.

  • This historical monument is well worth a visit whatever the weather. Although snowy on our visit, it is only a short walk from the car park up a heated path and steps!

  • We enjoy learning while on vacation therefore visiting the Struve Geodetic Arc was an important stop. It is the first site to be included on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites. One needs to stop....  more

  • It helps that we saw the monument on a beautiful, sunny summer's day. The Struve geodetic arc runs to the Black Sea and consists of triangulation points used in the 19th century to calculate the exact size and shape of the earth. The Hurtigruten currently docks very close by - while its usual terminus is being repaired. It is quite hard to find a walking route there through the docks but it is clearly visible from the top deck of the ship.
  • Interesting monument with explanation in several languages at the foot of the mound it stands on. The monument itself is inscribed in Norwegian and Latin. I knew my school Latin would find a use eventually! There are steps up the mound, but also a wheelchair friendly curved path. Monument is only 300m from Hurtigruten, town centre is a lot further, so this makes a good short walk if your time is limited.
  • Bit of a trip from the town but offers a nice walk including the fort and lighthouse.
  • Great views of harbour and fantastic story about how this monument came to be.
  • Very well explained placards. Very good experience.
