Concealed deep within a fjord sits Trolltunga, a scenic cliff and one of Norway's most notable hiking destinations. The slender rocky plateau juts out about 1,100 m (3,610 ft) above sea level, hovering above the lake below. The full hike takes up to ten hours and traverses steep mountain ridges. The route takes you past waterfalls, glacial potholes, lush vegetation, and a dam. You can prolong your stay by bringing a tent to camp, but be aware that the weather can change quickly. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring extra clothing, a map, a compass, and plenty of food and water. Cell phone service is not available along the route. Still some snow on the mountains at the moment, but it makes the shot look very pretty. It's melting fast though. There's snow on the trail, but it's just a couple slushy bits. Loved the hike! We started at P3 and it was 20km round-trip. The beginning is a little steep with rock stairs and then it flattens out for a long while. We started at 7am and got there around 9:30am. Not much of a line at that time. It got way longer once we sat down to eat food. Definitely a must-do if visiting Norway!

One of the craziest hikes with unreal views. Be prepared to do 20kms of hike (from P3) in a decently maintained trail. Advisable to book parking at P3 well in advance as very limited spots are available. The parking is pretty expensive, but saves quite a bit of hike time and distance. Shoulder month like September is great because the crowd is minimal, but weather can be bad at times.

We did the hiking on October 3rd without a guide. We started at 6:40 in the morning from parking P2 and we arrived to the top of the hike “the tongue of the troll” at 11:20 - and we took two breaks of 5-10 min on the way. On the top we took a break of one hour and then we started to go down. We arrived to our car around 16:00. We weren’t sure if it’s a good idea to do this hike without a guide, but it was really not hard to understand where to walk nor was it dangerous at any time. We had good weather with just a little bit of rain, mostly cloudy and sunny. Most of the hike is flat, only the beginning was up hill (around 6 km) Highly recommend to do this hike just check the weather before you start and it’s important to start early in the morning. Would definitely recommend to do it on your own. Just keep the time in mind and you will be all fine.

Okay facts: - P3: 30 spaces, advanced booking required (many days in advance!) - P1/P2: no advance booking possible, but quite some spaces - during main season (July-September): come early (latest 08:30) - P2 is recommended in comparison to P1, because you save a 4 hours street hike - bring proper gear (snow during the hike and potential, fast weather changes) - take the bus to P3(!!!) - you save another 90 minutes hike on the street - Overall time required (beginning from P3): 6-7 hours for 20km (10km one-way: 3 hours with short breaks and average pace). - No extra tickets required to start the trail (you basically pay that with your parking tickets) The hike is absolutely amazing, not only the Trolltunga stone itself. 100% worth it!

Just got back from hiking trolltunga. At first we were a little nervous and thought maybe we were in over our heads hiking this without a guide. It wasn’t as bad as I had read. The trail is marked with bamboo sticks to keep you on the right path. Overall this was the highlight of our trip. Make sure you are in halfway decent shape. Lots of uphill walking. Would highly recommend for everyone to try it and see it this place.
