Dedicated to one of Norway's most well-known pioneering spirits, Kon-Tiki Museum displays the vessels, artifacts, and personal effects of Thor Heyerdahl. Heyerdahl famously set sail in 1947 on a raft from South America and traveled to Polynesia in order to reinforce his theory about pre-Columbian island colonization. Visit the museum to see the Kon-Tiki craft used on this excursion, as well as other reed boats Heyerdahl employed on later expeditions. Wander the different exhibits focused on Heyerdahl's life, his vessels, and the life and culture of the islands he visited. Don't miss the collection of more than 8,000 books--a tribute to Heyerdahl's prolific career as a scientist, researcher, and writer. Take a look at our Oslo visit planner to schedule your visit to Kon-Tiki Museum and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

Great place to spend more than 1 hour..they also showcase the full.movie that got the Oscar. The ship is amazing and the theory and how they did it is amazing...6 great explorers. Worth to pay to see the ships. Part of the history ! There are two great museums nearby don't miss them !

Amazing! Rarely do I walk into a museum without any idea of what I am getting myself into. This was an exception. The story is well-told. The museum is stocked. Exhibits are fascinating. How this all came to be is astounding and shocking and improbable (kon-tiki and the cultural bloom that emerged from it) and seeing it in one place really brings that home.

Quite an experience. Seeing the original Ra II and Kontiki rafts with stories and memorabilia from the crews of Thor Heyerdahl's expeditions. What an inspirational man. His theories haven't stood the test of time but his determination and pluck gave him a magnetism. An emotional experience.

One of three museums next door to one another. We came here as part of the cruise ship shore tour with the provided bus. We had to move quickly through the museum to keep on schedule and get back to ship. So give yourself plenty of time here and the other museums. I took a number of photos to give you some idea of what's here. Before the official tour we came here on our own on the number 30 bus for 118 kroner each. We took a shortcut back to ship and official tour by taking the water taxi across the harbor. See photo. Much better way to get around harbor and see the sights. You have to use credit card to pay for taxi.

Enjoyed reading and watching videos about the expeditions of Thor Hyderdahl and his multi national teams. The exhibits were detailed and children's level explanation included for families with young readers. You can get a dual museum day pass for the adjacent FRAM Museum for some savings.
