Create an itinerary including The Arctic Cathedral
For a taste of modern northern architecture, visit The Arctic Cathedral, one of Tromso's important churches. Built in 1965 and partially inspired by Sydney, Australia's famous opera house, the church showcases a triangular construction and a glass frontal facade. Though the main structure is concrete, it's covered by aluminum sheets. Explore the interior of the church, which, though mostly minimalist, boasts an intricate stained-glass window on one end (as well as an organ with nearly 3,000 pipes). Be sure to bring your camera and get a shot of the cathedral from a distance or across the water, as the peaked structure stands out starkly against the mountainous backdrop. Put The Arctic Cathedral into our Tromsdalen attractions tool to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Tromsdalen.

  • Worth a visit and interesting that it is also used for musical concerts, which is outside the norm for a place of worship. Imposing structure from the outside but nothing spectacular on the inside,

  • We saw this place at night therefore we never got to see the fabulous stain glass windows as it was too dark. It wasn't a fabulous place to see.

  • A wonderful church situated on a small hill. Although the church was not built in a typical Norwegian design, but it fits perfectly into its surroundings. the beautiful glass window alone is an eye-catcher. Admission per person NOK 70 - relatively cheap for Norway. You should definitely visit this church when you are in Tromsø.
  • Visited on a Sunday evening and it was pretty quiet. The architecture is impressive, but mostly from the outside. I'd say it's not worth paying the 70NOK (£5.5) to go inside, it feels pretty empty and the exhibition downstairs was a missed opportunity to make the visit interesting. I'd have liked to learn more about the history of the cathedral instead.
  • Beautiful cathedral. Lots of information inside. Fair price, 55nok entry. Can stay as long as you wish, but does close to the public at 5pm. Easy access by local bus (20nok 1 hour use) from city Central.
  • Nice place. I visited around 10am. Cathedral was closed for public because of some function inside ( might be wedding). I couldn't see the tinted glass walls. The cathedral was looking heavenly with the colours from the background mountain and the sunrise.
  • Small cathedral but unique architecture!! Entrance ticket can be of less price. But worth seeing the stain glassed window inside!! If you are in tromso then visit it!!
