Create an itinerary including Piquillacta
Step inside pre-Incan Peru at Piquillacta, which has stood in this spot for almost 15 centuries. Get a glimpse of ancient agricultural practices at the ruins of an irrigation system, which includes a stretch of aqueducts. Stand in the streets and appreciate the tall walls that still guard the long-abandoned walkways. With so much to explore, the site remains a great place for both children and adults interested in a bit of Peruvian history. • This ancient did was more incredible than I expected. The wall around the entire city has sections of double-walked pathways and it appears some buildings may have been a couple stories high. The community layout here was very well organized and it was peaceful place to walk around. These ruins were a pleasant surprise.
  • If you have a cucso tourist pass, come on down to Pikillacta and get it punched. You might be thinking, you've seen plenty of Inca ruins, but the reality is, these are Wari ruins of a granary built *before* the Inca's came. The excavated houses had plaster on the walls, and the stone wall have mortar holding them together. The Incas never used either of these. The Wari left after water dried up and the Incas moved in later. However, even though the Incas operated the city wall/gate nearby, they never used Pikillacta for their own purposes.
  • Great Pre-Inca archeological site located in the southern Valley near Cusco. If your interested in history and Pre-Inca culture this stop should be on your list.
  • Impressive pre-Inka Wari-built city that once housed 10,000+ people. Very thoughtfully designed and built and the Peruvian government has done a decent job in reviving the site. Definitely worth a visit if you’re into something different than Tipon, Pisac, and Machu Pichu.
  • Beautiful old fortress in the south valley of Cusco. Main attraction is what is left of the big corridors between walls. There are also a couple of houses ruins and a nice spot for relaxation.
