Stutthof Concentration Camp
Stutthof was a Nazi concentration camp established by Nazi Germany in a secluded, marshy, and wooded area near the village of Stutthof (now Sztutowo) 34 km (21 mi) east of the city of Danzig (Gdańsk) in the territory of the German-annexed Free City of Danzig. The camp was set up around existing structures after the invasion of Poland in World War II and initially used for the imprisonment of Polish leaders and intelligentsia. The actual barracks were built the following year by prisoners. Most of the infrastructure of the concentration camp was either destroyed or dismantled shortly after the war. In 1962, the former concentration camp with its remaining structures, was turned into a memorial museum.Put Stutthof Concentration Camp into our Sztutowo attractions website to see other points of interest to visit during your vacation in Sztutowo.
Stutthof was the first German concentration camp set up outside German borders in World War II, in operation from 2 September 1939. It was also the last camp liberated by the Allies, on 9 May 1945. It is estimated that between 63,000 and 65,000 prisoners of Stutthof concentration camp and its subcamps died as a result of murder, starvation, epidemics, extreme labour conditions, brutal and forced evacuations, and a lack of medical attention. Some 28,000 of those who died were Jews. In total, as many as 110,000 people were deported to the camp in the course of its existence. About 24,600 were transferred from Stutthof to other locations.

It's very strange to give this place 5 stars. I give the 5 star review because off our tour Guides knowledge and the way he told the story of Stutthof. The history of Stutthof is just barbaric. You can't believe this ever happened. The way the Germans treated human life is just unbelievable. We strongly recommend every human being to have a guided tour at Stutthof, just to learn the history of WWII. We have to thank Mr.Shuttle for a interesting trip and additional knowledge of the Gdansk area and history.

As sad as it was it was very moving and we had a great host he made it very interesting.

Very interesting and well preserved camp of ww2. To see what horror was inflicted on people is unbelievable.
-
A very impressive historical place to be and to see. It is full of memories and well preserved. The surroundings are quite beautiful especially during the autumn. The museum has free entrance but you have to pay for parking. Definitely worth the trip.

What a sobering place. It feels insensitive to say that I had a great time. I had a tour by Thomas, an English speaking tour guide: I highly recommend having an expert show you around to explain the history behind this tragic place. It's the first time I've been to Poland, and to a concentration camp. We really must never forget the atrocities that happened at places like this. The juxtaposition between the rusty barbwire and watch towers seen alongside the natural beauty of the camps surroundings are haunting.
