Castelo de S. Jorge, a second-century citadel, overlooks the historical center of the city. This castle dates back to medieval times, approximately 48 BCE, when the city was under Roman rule. Celtic people originally inhabited this hilltop location, but ownership of the area changed over the years from Phoenicians, Greeks, and Carthaginians to Romans and a few other key players. In the 10th century, Moorish people fortified the fortress with cerca Moura, or Moorish encirclement. Though the 1755 Lisbon earthquake destroyed much of the castle, the remaining ruins are still open to the public. We spent several hours at The moorish castle, very unique. There are many peacocks inside. Wonderful views up there. Remember to go another side to see the hanging bridge, which is a medieval castle.... more

Very well preserved castle and keep. The trek to the castle is a bit, but if you walked through Lisbon for a couple of days, it won't seem bad. You can easily buy tickets online and save the time (quite the queue when we were) by going straight to the turnstiles. The views of Lisbon are magnificent and you get refreshments on site. There are toilets on site and a souvenir shop. A museum and an archaeological site to cover the historic preservation of the site. All in all great couple of hours spent.

Nice big castle where you can walk along the walls and get amazing views of the city. However there’s not much information or history to engage with except a few signs and a small museum with some pottery. There are also some peacocks wandering around. Overall I still really enjoyed it and felt it was worth the 10 euro ticket price.

You can spend quite a few hours in this beautiful castle ruin. Standing high above the city, you can enjoy a wonderful view in all directions, many of the city's landmarks can be viewed here from a bird's eye view. You can relax in the arbors, but there is also room to climb up and down, and the garden is well maintained. All in all, it's worth the price of admission.

The castle looks great, even though some early renovations weren't the best. The views are awesome, the peacocks pretty and fun to watch, the gardens are interesting, but.... it has no armouries, not a single sword or a bow, just a few canons in the garden and raw walls and towers. I'm kinda upset to be honest.

— HONEST REVIEW — 8.1/10 ⭐️- Sunset Recommendation Amazing views of Lisbon at the top of the hill! A relatively large castle to explore and gives you the chance to walk along the walkway of the castle wall. There are no safety bars along the wall and the staircase to go up is quite narrow and steep. Even though there was a lot of people, it was quite spacious and allowed you to enjoy your own scenic walk. The price for ages 13-25 is only 5€ and is definitely worth the price especially during the sunset. Really nice aesthetic vibes. The walk to the entrance is up an inclined hill but worth the walk!
