Create an itinerary including National Museum of Ancient Art
The vast collection of art housed at National Museum of Ancient Art includes paintings, sculptures, textiles, furniture, drawings, and other decorative arts created between the 15th and 19th centuries. Housed inside a lemon-colored palace from the 17th century, the museum remains one of city's major draws, presenting the evolution of European and Asian art through the ages. Pay special attention to the large panels depicting members of medieval Portuguese society paying respects to St. Vincent, the patron saint of Lisbon. This work, attributed to artist Nuno Goncalves, represents one of the first collective portraits in European art. Other museum highlights include masterpieces by Durer, Bosch, Cranach, Raphael, Tintoretto, and Velazquez. • We decided to spend our time in the separate Portuguese section which I would highly recommend in order to enhance your visit to Portugal.

  • Absolutely massive museum full of incredible works spanning hundreds of years as you follow the development of European art throughout the past few hundred years. Leave significant time to see everything as it was far larger than expected! However, I would have liked to see them make the museum as a whole more informative with more signage.
  • So far, this is one of the best museums of ancient art I have seen. The collection of paintings and art religious statues are amazing. I highly recommend this museum in Lisbon, Portugal.
  • Largest collection of Portuguese and European Art I have seen in Lisbon, Portugal 🇵🇹 . Great works on display from Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel the Younger and many others. I enjoyed the European painting section of the museum the most but sculptures, gold and metal work are not to be neglected.
  • Although the weather was terrible on a Saturday morning, it’s incredible that hardly that many people visit this place. There are some significant historic Portuguese relics here. Gold, gem studded relics of the historic age. To painting by masters not probably cataloged correctly. However amazing and fantastic the collection is, there is a lot that needs to be addressed. The museum needs an advertising push to get people through the door. A lot of the pieces need better explanation and the artists of the works in the collection need to be brought to the forefront. There is so much room for huge improvement and it will need a lot of backers to help that off the ground.
  • Beautiful building, lovely garden with a great view. A lot of the art is great, although due to the period it represents there is a lot of religious art, which at times feels slightly over bearing. But some of the pieces are amazing and there is a great variety of items on display.
