Take a walk around Castelo de Silves, one of the best-preserved Moorish fortifications in Portugal, with its 11 towers, red walls, and excavation sites. Although the structure that can be seen today was built between the 8th and 13th centuries, excavations have revealed origins dating back to around 201 BCE. Located on a hilltop overlooking the town, the castle serves as a recreation spot, nestled in a landscaped park surrounded by palm trees, benches, and fountains. See the remains of food stores, Arab silos, and a 10 m (30 ft) tall cistern here. To visit Castelo de Silves and other attractions in Silves, use our Silves trip itinerary site.

  • Very rude lady in the reception. Racist against certain dogs. “Let me look at the dog and I will say if it can enter”.

  • I was debating with myself about seeing this castle. Was it worth the time? I have seen quite a few. What would this add? Is it special enough to take the time out? Ultimately, I convinced myself...

  • Great place to wonder around for an hour or so. It is cheap to get in but it is rich in history. The walls a well preserved and can be fully explored. Within the walls there are some interesting excavations. There is a lovely cafe in the middle of the grounds with a nice garden.
  • Really enjoyed our visit to this castle. Entrance was only €2.80 per adult and there was no queue to get in when we arrived mid morning. It doesn't take long to explore but it's fun to walk around the ramparts and interesting to see the excavations in progress. The cafe here is worth a visit too (opens at 10am). Be sure to check out their orange cake. Just to add, I'm not sure what some of the previous reviewers expected to see here. It's the exterior of an old castle which has been thoughtfully landscaped inside. If you're expecting to find something else, then this may not be the right place for you.
  • A really interesting morning spent enjoying the well preserved and presented interior excavation of the historical interior of this ancient castle. Considering the quality and diversity of the subjects the cost of entry is amazingly low. Like most castles the views are spectacular.
  • Nice but not great. People (staff) seemed like they would rather be someplace... Any place else. The Castle is beautiful, not much history on display other than the walls. There is an entrance fee (very reasonable) and an additional fee for the Museum. Maybe all the history is in the museum, I didn't go. It was very cool that the was a cafe inside the castle ( though it takes away from the history) which is nice to relax inside. After just coming from Ponferrada (Knights Templar Castle) this kinda disappointed. For the price it's nice but not a multiple day trip. I'm less than an hour or so (unless your getting coffee ☕) you'll be done. Personally I recommend going to Cafe Ingles just outside the castle entrance for coffee and pizza after you tour the grounds inside.
  • A slight incline through the pretty town of Silves will find you at the castle. Take some time here, there are refreshments and toilets the obligatory gift shop. This is a peaceful place, with a series of sculptures and water features with a well defined winding walkway. On the way back down stop in the shaded coffee shop.
