With its sheer drops, Transfagarasan Highway winds through the mountains, in sections clinging to the cliffs while passing through a natural gorge. Urban legend has it that Nicolae Ceausescu ordered the building of the 150 km (93 mi) road as a strategic route in case of Soviet invasion. The road will take you past the two castles associated with Vlad the Impaler (who inspired the legend of Dracula); you'll also see several lakes and a waterfall as you make your way to the second-largest dam in the country. The road's highest point is the tunnel, which connects the northern and southern sides of the lake at 2,042 m (6,700 ft). Be prepared to take your time, as you may run into shepherds and large flocks of sheep enroute. Plan a trip to Curtea de Arges easily and quickly by telling Klarna Trips to suggest an itinerary.

  • Wonderful place for nature lovers and snow lovers. Coming from Florida I didn't expect to find snow this late in Romania so it was a very pleasant surprise.

  • Definitely a main highlight of the trip and one of 2 must-ride roads in Romania 🏍️ 🏞️🌄 The views are simply spectacular so take a moment to stop and admire... Don't rush through. The experience of riding this road was even more unique because of the sudden weather change. Photos only show the conditions on the southern part of the road... ⛰️ The pass is split by a relatively short mountain tunnel. The moment we passed it, it was like entering a different country. Fog was as thick as milk and temperature dropped by several degree. All that, because of the cloud that wedged itself against the northern face of the mountain... Truly unforgettable experience... ⚠️ Road surface is patchy so don't speed and carefully pick your lines... Nevertheless, it's definitely worth visiting again during another trip to Balkan countries. 🦊
  • To put it simply - driving through the mountains is an incredible experience and the views are breathtaking. Extra care has to be taken into consideration while taking the corners along the twisty roads. And when driving after sunset I’d rather avoid stopping along the way and getting out of the car to enjoy the views - the bears are really out there!
  • Spectacular place to visit. The road itself makes you speechless 🙊. The view is more than expected. A perfect mixture of nature and modern trend.
  • I’m from Italy and I have seen a lot of beautiful scenery and landscapes from the Alps and Apennine Mountains. I would say this is one of the most beautiful road that I’ve seen in my life, right in the middle of two huge mountains, zigzagging in the valley. Too bad for the way too many tourists that are literally walking and taking photos in the middle of the road and ruin the whole atmosphere. Recommended to pass through if you are on the way to Bucharest from Sibiu!
  • What a beautiful road. Get to know first before climbing to the top if the road is opened, we stood in front of a closed road and headed back down. Seeing wild bears was one of the most incredible things ever.
