Ivan the Terrible founded the cathedral in 1552, and it was originally built out of local sandstone and consecrated in 1562. Since then it has been devastated by fire and repaired at least six times in its history. The interior of the cathedral features lavish gold and red decor, as well as intricate iconography in the Orthodox style. Of particular interest is a copy of the holy icon Our Lady of Kazan, given to the Russian Orthodox Church by Pope John Paul II in replacement of the original icon, which was stolen and presumably destroyed in 1904. One of the most ancient and without exaggeration is the most stunning temple of the Kazan Kremlin. Just look at this floor, the stones of which rubbed with millions of feet over hundreds of years. A stunning painting of the walls and ceiling vaults sends us to the best pictorial works of the Middle Ages.
