Learn the tragic love story behind the building of Suyumbike Tower, a sacred symbol and a place of worship for the Tatar people. Legend has it that Tsar Ivan the Terrible built the tower for a Kazan princess who jumped to her death from the tower rather than becoming his bride. However, the 58 m (190 ft) brick tower, with six widening tiers on a gated arch, was constructed most likely 150 years after Ivan's conquest of Kazan in 1552. Its weak foundation has begun to sink, giving the tower a noticeable lean. The tower is the most prominent feature of the Kazan Kremlin, which was declared a historical and cultural open-air museum in 1994 and a World Heritage Site in 2000. One of the most mysterious, legendary symbols of ancient Tatar history, hidden behind the curtain of many centuries, where it is difficult to distinguish truth from legends. In no case does not detract from its beauty and greatness.
