Hg Smeltery, Idrija

A very interesting exhibition about mercury ore smelting and mining in Idrija. There are a lot of superlatives about the mercury mine in Idrija and the environmental impact 500 years of mining left behind. The exhibition that shows what mercury used to be used for is also amazing. The guides are wonderful and they know how to present the story of their town. Very recommended!

This museum was incredible, an amazing tour with a splendid guide plus 2 very interesting exhibitions on the history of the smelting plant and the use of the metal mercury. Very wel done !

It was very interesting experience. Until now, I had not visited mine for mercury planting. Moreover, I didnt know nothing about mercury mining. I was really surprised of wide spectrum of thinks where mercury is used. Of course, side effects of mining are still here. Higher radioactivity, Hg in environment circulation, higher lung diseases and cancer etc. But Hg area is included in unesco, it means, great opportunity to see unbeleavable factory

We visited it today and we highly recommend it, as much for the exhibition content than for the guide who explained us everything about mercury with humor, passion and pedagogy.

Exelent guide and good exhibits. Nowadays it is hard to understand how miners were willing to go in live silver mine knowing it is poisonous.
