Holy Trinity Church, Idrija

The church that stands on the spot where the škafar discovered mercury while soaking the škafas before selling them.

The Church of the Holy Trinity is the oldest church in Idrija. It is placed in the place where the "škafar" (the man who found mercury) is said to have first noticed native mercury while he was irrigating škafe. First, the original wooden church was built on the present site. Until the beginning of the 17th century, the building had a brick Gothic presbytery, a wooden nave and a flat and painted ceiling. Over time, the church itself changed. It fell into a bit of a crisis after the parish church of St. Barbara was built. But today the Church of the Holy Trinity has been beautifully renovated. It was renovated by the Parish of Idrija in 1981-1984, according to the plans of the architect France Kvaternik. The building was restored to its authentic form or design. The interior of the church is beautiful, where historical and modern stylistic elements are sensibly emphasized. The brightly colored stained glass windows of the academic painter Lojzet Čemajar stand out the most. This sensibly connected biblical and Idrian topics. More or less, the church and its beautiful stained glass windows can only be observed and admired from the outside. The visit is suitable for adults as well as families with children.
