Founded in 1918, National Gallery features a permanent exhibit of art from the Middle Ages to the 20th century. Also interesting, a Baroque fountain in the central gallery, restored in 2008. Notable artists exhibited there include famed names from both Slovenia and rest of Europe. Go to the website to find information about a guided tour in English, an ideal way to experience the permanent collection or any temporary exhibits. The old building itself is a nice art piece. But the collection of old masters which is housed there is mediocre at best. The collection of Slovenian artists in the new wing is very good though.

amazing pieces but you need a bunch of time if you want to see all the exhibitions (around 2 hours total). i would recommend if you have the mental capacity to invest into the artwork for that long. it had paintings and sculptures from renaissance up until the 60s-70s (and some modern pieces as well), a whole art experience in my opinion.

The gallery was nice but very small, they had a few rooms dedicated to medieval to 18th century art and two short time exhibitions. There are only a few places to sit down and enjoy the art. I also thought it was super cold, definitely bring a sweater or cardigan. Don't forget to bring only a small bag, big bags gave to be left in a small locker.

The National Gallery of Slovenia can rival those of other major capitals such as Vienna. It exhibits an impressive collection of paintings while showing the nation's uniqueness in critical thinking, originality of thought, and what makes this country so unique in the modern world.

Good gallery. The permanent collections are great. However, some paintings were not illuminated well and you could not see them in detail or they were reflecting the light. And the room temperature was too cold because of the AC.

Last year I visited the National Gallery of Slovenia, which contains the country's largest fine art collection from the medieval period to the twentieth century. The atmosphere was quiet and almost religious. Personally I was impressed by gothic sacred art, baroque and neoclassical paintings and romantic landscapes. I think that is essential to unearth slovenian artists, who are no way inferior to the european famous ones. There is also the original Baroque Robba fountain, which used to stand in Ljubljana's town square. I recommend this place if you are visiting the city.
