The Slovenian writer Ivan Cankar (1876-1918) came from a lower-class family, which left a significant mark on his work. His birth house, originally a wooden cottage with a thatched roof, burnt down in a fire. In 1880, new owners of the site reconstructed it and gave it its present appearance. Our Vrhnika travel planner makes visiting Cankar Memorial House and other Vrhnika attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Stumbled upon this by chance on a morning walk. Thoroughly enjoyed the short tour that gave a real sense of the life and times of Cankar, his family and Slovenia at that time.

  • Nice place, very interesting for poetry lovers. The guide is so professional and polite, and she loves Cankar also. S❤️nija!
  • Closed.
  • Very nice staff!
  • Beautifully restored house of the Cankars in Klanec, beautifully furnished and presented, especially if you are led by Ivan himself. Honor and glory to our greatest writer, who makes us even more proud to be Slovenians!
  • The visit to the house of the writer Ivan Cankar is interesting. Suonino was a very successful tailor, so much so that he managed to have 21 children, one of them was Giuseppe, the writer's father. Giuseppe bought the house from his father and the writer Ivan grew up here.
