Observe one of the landmark entrances of the old citadel, Dongdaemun Gate (Heunginjimun)--a defensive gate designed to protect the important government compound within. First constructed in 1396, the gate underwent reconstruction in 1869. It displays many architectural and design hallmarks of the late Joseon period, including a semicircular outer wall, known as an ongseong, which provides extra protection. The only gate of the city's eight to have this feature, the edifice also boasts heavily decorated brackets supporting the hipped roof on each of its two floors.
