Built on the slope of a hill within the walls of a fortress, Hwaseong Haenggung Palace served as the king’s out-of-town residence during times of war and occasions when he visited his father’s tomb. The 18th-century palace, which was severely damaged during the Japanese colonial period, was restored based on information from detailed court records and opened to public in 2003. When it was not occupied by the king, the governor used the palace as his office. Start your tour with a visit to the exhibition hall and 3D theater outside the front entrance, then see how the area looked in the past at the square in front of the palace. If you’re visiting between March and November, you can catch a changing of the guard ceremony and a demonstration of martial arts. Look for the sacred tree at the entrance, pick up a piece of paper and a pen lying next to it, write down your wish, and tie it to the tree. Rather disappointing, perhaps because it was so cold and muddy creating rather depressing ambience. Not a lot to see though other than bunch of rather alike buildings.

The palace was a pretty neat trip back through history. The explanations were quite good (and in English as well as Korea) and gave you insight as to how the palace and the fortress came to be. Buildings are of course new construction due to the Japanese destroying the originals during their occupation (like they destroyed almost everything else in this country), but the current versions are well-maintained and give a good sense of the history of the building. Tickets are relatively inexpensive. Worth seeing for sure

We visited this palace in the evening, during the night tour and it was Fantastic!!! The palace is just as big and beautiful like all the palaces in Seoul, so I think it is quite underrated among overseas visitors compared to others, but it is totally worth visiting! If you go up the highest point you can see the beautiful city landscape from above and also the Hwaseong fortress & a hot air balloon too! at night there was also a light show in the middle area of the palace, with different lights constantly changing and Korean traditional music playing in the background too! There are also some exhibits on how people used to live there back in a day! Super interesting!

goes along with the fortress, great for pictures. we were only there a short time, so we didn't have a chance to go into the history. if you are in the area checking out the fortress this should be on the list of your stops.

Great heritage site to view in Suwon. We also did the trolley tour around the walls and that was also very worthwhile. We saw the changing of the guards complete with weapons display. I'm glad I included this in my trip.

Friendly and helpful staff. This location has some neat exhibits which are interesting for Korean heritage, however there are other great sights to see around this area. For tourists visiting South Korea this is definitely worthwhile.
