Green Mountain National Park, Ascension Island

Stunning place, great views of the Island and a completely different environment compared with the rest of the island

Absolutely wonderful park with many paths (maintained by island volunteers who are always looking for an extra hand) which twist and turn through woods and forest and rocky scree. The place is well documented by illustrated signage locally as well as a few guidebooks which can be obtained from the Obsidian Hotel. Personally I enjoyed taking jogs up the asphalt track, the track goes pretty much to the lower peak of Green Mountain from the Two Boats road. From there on tracks are mixed lose stone, compacted earth, tussocky grass, and mud. The exception is the volunteer maintained Dew Pond path, the last section of which is a boardwalk through the bamboo forest. Fauna and mixed climate flora are in abundance here. One caveat is the Elliot's Pass walk has several sheer drops along the route and mountain goats like to chill out on the path which can lead to some interesting encounters. Also the Botanical Gardens at the Red Lion (closed sadly) have park benches and a children's play area. The tunnel behind is blocked off due to a cave-in.

Starkly lunar but breathtaking. Hiked the only lush vegetation area on the island (Green Mountain). Very memorable (1989 was my last time there -- supporting NASA).
