After the city's medieval castle was destroyed by fire, Royal Palace was built in the same spot and has served as the king's residence since the 18th century. Located in the city's old town area, this castle has over 600 rooms and five museums. Following the destructive palace fire of 1697, the current structure was built by architect Nicodemus Tessin in 1754. Tour the palace grounds and buildings to see its 18th- and 19th-century interiors, museums, and royal costumes. Many visitors like to catch the changing of the guard ceremony, which has been a tradition since 1523. Take a look at our Stockholm trip planner to schedule your visit to Royal Palace and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

  • Impressive Palace, from the outside and even more so inside. The ticket to view it is well worth the money. Then of course the Changing of the guard, which was especially good on the Wednesday.

  • Good value for money, as there were different areas that you could visit. Tickets were around £15 for an adult and you could go into a large chunk of the palace, a museum plus the treasury area for...

  • Beautiful, stunning palace. Doesn't look that great from the outside - in fact, the Parliament House next to it looks more majestic, however, almost every room inside was jaw-dropping. It's...

  • Very grateful to the Royal Family of Sweden for sharing a portion of their life to the public. It's nice to see the beautiful interiors of the palace and the opulence that goes with it. It's good to have a guide like Irene when visiting the palace as you you'll hear the stories and event history for each room / space inside. Grateful for the opportunity to see how royals live in the modern society. Had a quick glance of the changing of the guards as well. Very impressed.
  • This is one stop that you probably shouldn't skip if you're in Stockholm, especially if you're trying to learn about their culture and history. Every room of the palace is a piece of art that tells a different story, from the paintings, sculptures, and wall decor, to the garments, pins and flags that have been made over the decades. A cool detail is that the Sweden still utilizes the palace to celebrate certain events, so it serves multiple purposes. Genuinely an impressive and massive architecture inside and out. We didn't have to wait in line to buy the tickets or get into the palace, but you can buy those online if you're interested. The palace itself takes a good amount of time to get around, especially if you're into Sweden's history and culture, around 2-3 hours and maybe even more.
  • Simply great. Actually it's several visits. The royal jewels, the flats and the armoury. It is surprising that the flats are still in use (although recent visitors have declined the honour and gone to the hotel). Booked a couple of hours for the visit ... When booking you have to choose a time for the visit and there is only one hour of flexibility.
  • Very beautiful and historic.the old apartments and the other apartments including guest ones were grand. The audio guide that's available with a qr code was very detailed and engaging. Easy boards in English are very helpful. Grand portraits and furniture. Worth visiting! The roof paintings are awe-inspiring.
  • Wonderful experience at the Royal Palace. I went on a Monday in September and there were minimal crowds which is great. Your admission ticket also includes access to other museums on site so you should go and check them out too!
