Trip Planner: Europe / Switzerland / Canton of Geneva / Geneva / Cathedrale de Saint-Pierre
For panoramic views over the city and its lake, climb the northern tower of Cathedrale de Saint-Pierre. Known mostly as the adopted home church of John Calvin (one of the leaders of the Protestant Reformation), the cathedral dates back to the 12th century, its architecture an eclectic mix of styles. The archaeological site beneath the cathedral, excavated over the last few years, reveals the city's rich history and explores the origins of Christianity in this part of Europe. Take the underground passage connecting the cathedral to the adjacent museum, dedicated to presenting the historical significance of the Reformation. Audio guides are available in English, German, and French. If you'd prefer a guided tour, check the website, where you'll also find information about upcoming live organ performances. The panorama view from the top of the cathedral is amazing. The entrance to the main hall of the cathedral is free. A ticket is needed to visit the south and the north towers. It costs 7CHF and there were no queues. However, prepare for a lot of small stairs to go up! There is no elevator. The view is really amazing, especially to the lake and it is worth the effort.
We visited this 850+ year old cathedral which is impressive. We climbed St Peter’s Tower and had spectacular view of Geneva. It was an adventure since we climbed the first tower and walked across the other tower. It was awesome to be outdoor (not only see through windows) and view Geneva at different angles. It is super windy when we went.
Visiting the (North) Tower was the highlight for us in Geneva! It's not that heavy going up but the view is amazing! See my pictures for self explanation. We were at lunch time up there and unfortunately the water fountain was turned off. However, at around 13:00(1pm) it was turned on again.
Out of all the churches we have visited in Europe, St Pierre is one of our favourites. It is one of the most historical cathedrals, accompanying Geneva since its birth, recording a tremendous amount of history within its walls and foundation. Not only its exterior is breathtaking, it's interior architecture is also grand and magnificent, with a gigantic organ at the back. Visitors can also climb its towers or visit the archaeological site for a fee. You can choose either or do both, but we chose to visit the archaeological site for CHF 8 per person as we are not fans of climbing towers, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. The site is situated beneath the church and you have to exit the church and climb down to find it. As history buffs, we were blown away by the sheer history of the remnants of the walls and foundation of the church, and how massive the entire archaeological site is. It is truly a humbling experience walking amidst history. Definitely a must do when you visit Geneva if you love history.
The cathedral was really amazing. The cathedral was built in 4th century after that the cathedral was been rebuilt in many times . St. Pierre Cathedral was built as a Roman Catholic cathedral, but became a Reformed Protestant Church of Geneva church during the Reformation. Also we can see a amazing museum it's completely under the cathedral . There are many statues in the church those are really beautiful also there is a small shop inside the cathedral which we can buy souvenir
