Appenzeller Brauchtumsmuseum Urnäsch, Urnaesch

My family hopped into this museum during the alpine descent parade, while waiting for the cows to arrive. We only speak English and the staff was so kind in trying to accommodate us. The highlight was the children’s scavenger hunt; complete with a flashlight, measuring tape, magnifying glass and other tools used to do puzzles on the booklet (in German only but easily to manage with google translate) and ultimately unlock a prize at the end. The museum is so hands on and engaging, our 7 year old really enjoyed himself with ringing bells, playing instruments, etc. Against advice, we skipped the video (offered in English and other languages) but circled back to it as it really is necessary to watch in order to understand the costumes on display. I’d be amiss not to mention that half of the museum has VERY low ceilings. At a hair over 6ft, I had to keep my head slightly lowered and full ducking through entryways. We’ve been to dozens of museums across all of Switzerland and this is one of our favorites. Such a unique traditions and culture that we knew nothing about. Really, one of the most interesting things we’ve experienced in Switzerland with also super generous and kind staff. We highly recommend a stop if you find yourself in the Appenzell region.

Excellent! Especially the costumes! One can dive into the local culture, very unique and authentic. A must to see.

The Appenzell customs museum show in a good and interactive way the traditions and way of living back in the days. The museum is placed in a building older than 400 years which is already an attraction for itself. Interesting for young and old!

Very fascinating history and culture here, they have no signs in English but there are QR codes you can scan and read some of the information,bas they do in many museums around. Also they have a movie that does play in English some of the time, just ask about it.
