Fenrui Historic Trail, Chiayi

A very professionally layout hiking trail but the walk is along a boardwalk with many stairs ( not a typical hiking path). The routes are well marked with maps and your location at several points. The forest is beautiful and tranquil.

I first stumbled upon this place years ago during my first visit to Taiwan. About 7 kilometers of beauty between two little towns. Always come back for a visit or to camp (not sure how legit camping is but plenty of spots). Bamboo groves, fir tree plantations, tea fields and high mountain charm. Trail is steeper on the Ruili side. Ascending from Fenchihu is somewhat easier. Public transportation from Fenchihu is much more abundant. Go, enjoy, and be respectful of this beautiful trail!

Unfortunately we did only about 2km of this trail during summer when it was raining quite hard. It was really slippery and not easy to do. At some point we walked very close to the edge so we decided to stop. If you are afraid of snakes and leeches, do not so this trail. I give it 3 stars because this trail is badly maintained but i believe it can be very nice during spring on non rainy days. The view could have been very spectacular and i would definitely give it another try, but not on rainy days. If you are lucky you'll be able to see the sea of clouds on this trail and close to Rueili you can see the tea fields.

Amazing 6.2km hike towards 瑞里. Round trip 12km. The beautiful scenery of cypress and bamboo made the long hike worthwhile

Fantastic hike. We did it in December on a clear and dry day, taking about 3 hours each way, 6 total. There was little in Ruili so take food/lunch and don’t expect transport options at that end. We did it in walking shoes, was ok but if it’s raining or wet it would be very slow and challenging because of slippery surfaces. Beautiful and rewarding if the conditions are right.
