Admire the restored mosaics from the Byzantine era on display at Great Palace Mosaics Museum, located underneath the city's popular bazaar. Created by roofing over the ruins of the Great Palace, the museum offers insight into the daily lives and social classes of the citizens from the Byzantine era through the stories told by the mosaics. The surviving mosaics capture 90 different themes that are populated by over 150 human and animal figures, depicting scenes like children playing, animals grazing, mythical creatures and tales, and daily activities. Some of the mosaics were used to decorate the pavement of a peristyle, or columned, courtyard, discovered during the excavations. Feel free to touch many of the exhibits as you read about how much time, effort, and money went into creating and preserving them upon their discovery. Note that the museum can be difficult to find, as it is surrounded by a shops on an nondescript street, so ask for directions from a local or watch for signs. A visit to Great Palace Mosaics Museum represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Istanbul trip planning website to plot your vacation.

  • True hidden gem for history lovers. We went there by chance while we were trying to find a towel shop in the Arasta market by the Blue Mosque. It is difficult to find the entrance but it worth it.

  • Conveniently located next to the Arasta Bazaar; an ideal spot for tourist visitors but don’t expect a lot from this museum. I felt it could be curated with better constructed information and display.....  more

  • Probably my least favorite museum in Istanbul. Very limited information on any of the exhibits and in general they seem to be not very well cared for. The mosaics that are there are very nice to look at but if I didn’t already have an Istanbul Museum Pass I would have skipped it. Worth checking out only to mark it off places you never have to return to.
  • One attraction I hadn’t been to before was the Great Palace Mosaics Museum, containing excavated mosaics from the 5th century Byzantine Palace. There was a huge amount of information about how the mosaics were originally made, then rediscovered and restored but I was conscious that it wasn’t really Natalya’s thing so I skim read a lot. The mosaics were beautiful though, vibrant colours and lovely designs even 1500 years later and again, only a few minutes walk away.
  • A very small and really difficult to find as the main access is through a bazar. The receptionist was though helping and cooperative. Museum's history including it's important events like it got damaged and then was restored in some time, needs to be put at some prominent place. I had to ask this from the souvenir shop operator, who was also nice and helpful. All in all, this can be completed in not more than half an hour.
  • Beautiful museum, not big but the collection of mosaics are very rich and beautiful, the mosaics are all from the Great Palace Of Constantinople that doesn’t exist today as it was already in ruins during the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans, overall if you really like history generally and mosaics especially then i do recommend this museum, it was a nice experience.
  • Very limited information of any of the exhibits and the whole museum seams too small and not cared good at all. It’s Hurd to find the way to the museum because the road was through the market. The price of the ticket is not expensive but not worth of 10 minutes walking on this place and thinking that you definitely do not back again.
