St. Thomas Synagogue
Declared a National Historic Landmark in 1997, St. Thomas Synagogue remains an elegant and unique site with a rich heritage. The second oldest in the United States, the synagogue was built in 1833 for a Sephardic congregation established some 40 years before. The history of the site echoes through the European architecture speckled all over the building, such as Dutch chandeliers that hang overhead. You will be immediately struck by the sand floor of the synagogue, for which no one is sure of the origin, although helpful guides will happily provide you with popular theories. Enjoyed visiting and learning! Really lovely, special visit. Didn't catch our guide's name (who was filling in for the main guide as it was her birthday and she had the day off) but thank you for your knowledge and kindness! and also for sharing your cute cat friend DB with us 🥰

Certainly worth the visit to see the 2nd oldest Synagogue in the hemisphere. Sand floors are amazing. Only about 2 blocks off the beat and path of the main shops. Free to go in and take photos. Even if you not Jewish it's worth the trip if you appreciate such things.

Pretty awesome place. The second oldest Synagogue in the western hemisphere! The Synagogue floor is covered with sand. You'd think it's because the of the tropical location but actually it's just to make the service quite. The guide your is amazing. They are open for tourists again since the October 2020. Must see.

The Shul is a great place and everyone is always friendly and helpful. Nice gift shop. We belong to the Shul for a long time as a Chai members. We get notified of Yahrzeit with our membership which is very helpful. So next time you’re in St Thomas stop by.

What a fascinating story of preference and community. This is the second oldest synagogue in the western hemisphere. It's story is captivating and all of the ceremonial objects, asking with the materials that make up the building have a fascinating story. Addie clearly loves where she works and she brings the story to life. We even got a chance to meet the rabbi who is just charming. Make an appointment to your this synagogue - it's worth the trip!
