Housing both an abbey and the battleground of the most famous battle in English history, Battle Abbey and Battlefield memorializes the fallen at the 1066 Battle of Hastings. Began under the orders of William the Conqueror after he wrested England from the Anglo-Saxons, the abbey hosts movies and CGI displays to explain this turning point in British history. In the Abbey, feel the pulse of history by standing where the last Anglo-Saxon ruler, King Harold, was slain. Outside, walk around the grounds of the actual site of the battle and use the audio guide to learn how it all unfolded. The official website has an activity pack to download filled with games and activities to engage the entire family. Large places to explore including walls around the Battle site and around the buildings and remains. Quite good explanations on the boards and the free audio tour. Loads of stairs and hills to navigate. Even then remains can be a challenge to get around although there is a wheelchair track around the site. Well worth a visit. We were there for 4 hours but did not finish it. There is a visitor centre which is particularly good for children. The cage head a variety of food including vegan and gluten free. We were lucky to see inside battle school since it is school holidays.

Exactly as you remember it from your childhood school trips! But dare I say more fun as an adult! Great place to spend an afternoon, short or long walking tours with the shorter tour wheelchair accessible. The staff put on a great little show which explains the story of the battle of Hastings, it's aimed at kids but I loved it. The very best thing about this heritage site is that they are more than happy for you to bring your dogs along, they can even go all the way upto the rooftop view point! Splendid way to spend a day out with furry friends.

A wet and cold day in March, so there were not too many people around, which helped to get around and see things. Fascinating to finally see the actual place that those history lessons taught us about. I wouldn't have fancied running up that hill into a hail of arrows, so if I were Duke William, England would still be Anglo-Saxon! Very interesting. Recommended.

One of the best historical places I’ve visited with the kids. Truly immersive and fascinating. Very helpful and friendly staff. Great cafe. Parking is frustrating but the monks wouldn’t have known that would be an issue when the abbey was built 😂 Finding a parking space took a very long time so plan ahead to find alternative parking during school holidays or on special event days for sure. Don’t let that detract from how incredible this place is though. Can’t wait to go back!

All you need is a crazy boyfriend. The rest is history 😂😂🤣. Amazing day out, beautiful setting, lots of facts, school kids there as well. Nice walk/tour. Nice cafe. Lots of parking and quick snoop around local shops. Finally left after 6 hours
