Create an itinerary including Bodiam Castle
A quadrangular castle with buildings lining the outer walls, Bodiam Castle was once a bustling household. The outer walls were meant for display as well as defense, supporting important buildings to the household's function. The inner court holds the remains of a great hall located near the pantry and kitchens, as well as the Dalygrigge family's private chambers. The outer walls are mostly intact while the inner are ruins, but enough of the original floor plan is recognizable to identify the structures. The ruins make for haunting photos and provide a walking tour through history. Make Bodiam Castle part of your personalized Bodiam itinerary using our Bodiam trip planner.

  • Best castle I have ever been. It's so nicely remained. You can see a lot of things inside. The lake and reflection of the castle was so cool to photograph. It's worth to visit. The people who work there are so friendly and nice. They know a lot about the castle. My son was asking so many questions and they answered everything they could. Thank you for this wonderful experience.
  • Had a great evening with the family here! The castle is more about the sights if you're unable to climb the four 56+ step towers, but the view is spectacular! A quick walk around the castle's moat will show you the best angles of the castle, and the bridged entrance with fish in the water make a great photo spot.
  • The castle is epic...that goes without saying. The castle itself deserves 5 stars. Our visitor experience was mixed hence 4 stars. We visited on a Saturday in the Feb half term. It was half term but there wasn't really much going on except for a paper trail which cost £2 per child. We have 3 children so we decided not to participate in that. The castle view cafe was staffed by one person and after queuing at 1.30pm for 10 to 15 minutes we were told they only did adult sandwiches at this cafe and if we wanted kids lunch bags we would have to go back to the cafe at the entrance!?! Quite a long walk all the way back to the entrance with a hungry 8,4 and 2 year old! The cafe at the car park is also pretty small so we had to eat outside on a pretty windy day, not very pleasant. There seems to be a resident Archery group there, but they weren't engaging with the public even though they were partly in costume but sitting around on camping chairs shooting periodically at modern foam targets, it was all a bit confusing to be honest. The NT staff in the castle were friendly and the castle itself was fun for the kids to explore. But not much else to do besides. Luckily we are NT members so we didn't have to pay to get in. I'd have been disappointed if we did.
  • It's a great castle to visit, with lots to see, so long as you are able bodied enough to enjoy it. It's a short walk to the castle on a gravel path up hill with a circular path round the castle and a patch of grass at the front. There's one permanent toilet at the car park and a temporary one by the castle which is open some of the time. The website says it's an accessible venue, however in our experience it was very difficult to get around on the gravel paths in the wheelchair and seeing all of the rooms in the castle was impossible as you could only access them by spiral staircases. This is understandable as it's a castle, but I'd have hoped this would have been explained on the website.
  • Lovely place, you definitely need a car to get here. Haven't tried coming here by steam train but I imagine it shouldn't be too hard. It's a good day trip to do where you can arrive before 11 and finish by 3/4. It needs to have more historical content put around the castle wherever you can. I feel this is typical of most National trust places. There's more to the story than just the ruins. They could help tell the story with placards and posters.
