See what remains of what was once possibly the most magnificent monks' residence in England, Glastonbury Abbey. Dating back to the 7th century, the Abbey was even larger than St. Peter's Church in Rome before the ascendancy of Protestantism in England initiated its decline. If you visit between March and October, listen to the costumed guides' stories of the monks who once resided here and legends of the Abbey's association with King Arthur's Court. Head into the visitors' center for historical interpretation of the site and enjoy the 14.6 hectares (36 acres) of parkland surrounding the ruins. The venue stages events and exhibitions throughout the year, so check the schedule before visiting. • Whilst the majority of the abbey is now in ruins, what remains is stunning. The majority of the site is accessible to all and the museum is very informative. We visited early on a Sunday morning and it did pick up from half 11 onwards so getting there early is recommended to get the whole site to yourself.
  • Definitely a must when in Glastonbury. I came here not expecting too much but the sheer size of the ruins coupled with the guided tours and museum make this worth the visit. There are a few ponds and fields which make this a lovely place to walk around. Will definitely come back if I am ever in the area again.
  • Unbelievable site with spectacular history. Glastonbury punches so above its weight in terms of accessible, dramatic history and beauty. The perfect place to both see the sites and learn the stories, but also to just relax on the beautiful lawns and near the fish ponds.
  • Was really hoping this would be a 5* but it just falls short compared to some other Abbey's we have visited. Still a nice relaxing and spiritual place and obviously steeped in history and Mythology. Worth buying tickets in advance as I believe they are a touch cheaper if I recall? Little gift shop selling the usual bits and prices actually quite good for this sort of attraction. Be warned, car parking surprisingly limited in town, we got lucky on a side road.
  • What beautiful location. Tranquil. It was virtually empty for the duration of our visit, which was nice. Even the weather held out despite the promise of rain. Only a few fools disrespecting the area where the high altar once stood by crossing the barrier to stand inside the area, all other visitors were respectful and even friendly. Entry fee is worth it, take your time exploring. Delicious ice cream and a lovely tea were had while we enjoyed a little sit down to just take it all in and try to comprehend the sheer size that the entire structure and complex once we're. Very austere.
