Mam Tor is a 517 m (1,696 ft) hill near Castleton in the High Peak of Derbyshire, England. Its name means "mother hill", so called because frequent landslips on its eastern face have resulted in a multitude of "mini-hills" beneath it. These landslips, which are caused by unstable lower layers of shale, also give the hill its alternative name of Shivering Mountain.Make Mam Tor a centerpiece of your Hope vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Hope attractions planning tool.
In 1979, the continual battle to maintain the A625 road (Sheffield to Chapel en le Frith) on the crumbling eastern side of the hill was lost when the road officially closed as a through-route, with the Fox House to Castleton section of the road being re-designated as the A6187.
The hill is crowned by a late Bronze Age and early Iron Age univallate hill fort, and two Bronze Age bowl barrows. At the base of the Tor and nearby are four show caves: Blue John Cavern, Speedwell Cavern, Peak Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern where lead, Blue John, fluorspar and other minerals were once mined. Mam Tor was declared to be one of the Seven Wonders of the Peak by Thomas Hobbes in his 1636 book De Mirabilibus Pecci.
Simon Jenkins rates the panorama from Kinder Scout to Stanage Edge as one of the top ten in England.

Easy walk up from the car park via a maintained path. Not exactly mountain climbing! Lovely views from left to right. Can see for miles if the weather is ok. We did the National Trust circular...

A simply beautiful walk starting from Castleton and back. The views are ridiculously good and although the uphill sections are fairly hard work it is well worth the effort.

There are numerous sign boards around the park that direct hikers to a variety of foot trails..

First class views and not that difficult to access. There are car parks all the way up to the base of the summit but don't park on the side of the roads even if your over the double yellow lines... You will get a ticket. Two paths up, one with large flag stones or the longer, less steep route that goes around the rear of the summit. Either way its a slightly tricky 1.5 hour walk at a steady pace. Beware.... Approaching the summit from either direct there is a massive sudden drop towards Castleton. Stay on the path.

Beautiful views, steep quick climb to the summit from the dark peak car park. Another popular location. The ridge walk was stunning. Dogs need to be on leads.

Had a lovely walk from Castleton to Mam Tor, epic views with stunning scenery, rain from yesterday had made some of the paths wet and slippy but Mam Tor had big stone steps which made it easy to get to the top. I do suggest sticking to the off road paths as the drivers/tourists around here drive at stupidly high speeds and felt unsafe at times walking at the side of the road. Lots of carpark tho around Mam Tor which we found later on, so we didn't really need to park so far away.

If you love walking then this is the place for you. Spectacular views and suitable for all ages. Plenty of parking around but no toilet facilities so be prepared! There a few caverns located close by which we didn’t get to see due to timescales but there is always next time. Well worth a visit, you will not be disappointed.
