Surprise View, Portinscale

Great place to linger and admire the view of the Derwentwater lake and surrounding mountains. The road leading up to the viewpoint is well-maintained, but very steep. Can be accessed either by car, with an E-bike or if you're looking for a good work-out, a racing bike.

Sketchy road on the way up but with plenty of passing places, car park was half full on a weekday at 2pm, and the pay and display didn't accept any of my coins, but believe me when I say it was all completely worth it. One of, if not THE best views of the lake district you can get without hiking. Simply stunning. The car park is relatively small, so I would recommend coming during off peak times like weekdays, and sunrise instead of sunset.

The name of this extraordinary attraction couldn't have been any more accurate. 🏞 I went to Surprise View in December 2021, and it was the best. The panoramic views of Derwentwater and Bassenthwaite lakes were simply outstanding!

Stunning views over Derwent and Borrowdale up-to Keswick and Skiddaw. Take care as the drop is steep so stay back from the edge. Overall a must visit in the Lake District the name certainly fits the view.

3rd year of booking finally managed to stay at the Mary Mount Hotel!! Excellent hotel situated just outside of Keswick at the top of Derwentwater and ideally placed for short or long walks in the beautiful surrounding area. Hotel and staff lovely and I would highly recommend staying here!! Delicious meals served and they can always accommodate my gluten free diet 😋 xx
