Create an itinerary including Scotney Castle Garden
Step into the drama and romance of a landscape painting at Scotney Castle Garden. The formal garden, a celebrated example of the Picturesque style, was once host to a medieval castle and now surrounds the Victorian country mansion Scotney New Castle, which was inhabited until 2006. Wander through its rooms, admire the fine furnishings, and maybe even pet the resident cat. In the garden you can discover the ruins of the moated Old Castle and enjoy splendid flower collections. Venture further into the 310 hectares (770 acres) of woodland and parkland surrounding the garden, and spot the local Sussex Cattle. Grab a bite to eat in the tearoom or unwind and refuel in the woodland picnic area. Visit the castle’s shop to pick up some local produce, including honey made from the garden’s bees. Over the years, a number of notables have rented the apartments within: Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher rented the Belfry flat for a time in the 1970s as an escape and respite from Westminster life. • Now really is the time to have a walk round Scotney Castle Garden. The trees are ablaze with their gold autumnal colours. It is picture perfect on a sunny day.
