Trip Planner: Europe / UK / England / Oxfordshire / Oxford / Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology
The world's first university museum, the ornate, columned, and charming Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology sits on the campus of Oxford University and contains a collection of artifacts, objects, and documents related to a broad spectrum of history. Dating back to the mid-19th century, the building itself serves as a historical exhibit and features Greek Ionic architecture. The prime interest, though, lies in the facility’s various collections, which preserve pieces of Greco-Roman pottery, drawings by Da Vinci and Michelangelo, Stradivarius violins, Egyptian artifacts and many other such curiosities. Make sure you see the Alfred Jewel, a ninth-centry relic from the reign of Alfred the Great featuring a construction of enamel and quartz enveloped in gold. If you're traveling with children, check the museums program of activities for youngsters before you visit. Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology reviews
The exhibits in the Greek area were excellent as was all the exhibits. We went both days but still had more to see.

Have been to many museums, but this must rank at the very highest in terms of quality, ease of access, variety of exhibits, detailed and easily read descriptions and explanations. Could not do it...

I absolutely love this museum. Spotlessly clean, spacious and so many interesting exhibits. Free admission but a donation is welcome. Shows arts and cultures from all over the world with some amazing pieces to admire. Clean well maintained toilets. Did not visit the cafe or gift shop so cannot comment.
I've been in April with my daughter, we spent there half of the day. The museum is impressive, a lot of interesting things to see from different eras of history and different countries. We really enjoyed everything, but the roman statues and the Egyptian hieroglyphs really caught my eye, and another things that I loved were the Stradivarius violins.
The best museum I have ever visited. Understand this museum in in Oxford centre so being a seat of learning caters for all points of history. Clean, spacious with helpful staff. Lifts to floors, gift shop and tea room, spotless throughout lockers for your bags open or lockable umbrella stands (yes lockable) and mobile lightweight seating if you wish to study by an exhibit or rest for a while. Truly a fine place to visit. My visit was to see the Alfred jewel and was not disappointed. A must to visit while in oxford. And to top it all off its FREE. to enter, so drop in and out anytime during the day. A light and airy place not a old traditional dark and dusty museum. Nice to see the young people of Oxford and others studying inside the museum around exhibits. Gave the place such a nice feel.
Awesome museum with exhibits from all over the world coving different era’s of human history. One of the best public museums in England they have some fabulous pieces especially the Roman sculptures. This place is super historic its been open for more than 300 years. Best of all is totally free
So much to see here. 5 floors of history. There's different sections, for example, ancient Egypt, Asia, Rome etc Very interesting, lots of crockery, clothing, tombs, pottery, gold, jewellery, clocks and many many other items. We didn't purchase the map (£1) but I wish we had, it's like a maze as there's so many rooms. Free to enter, although you can leave a donation. No booking required. Has toilets and a cafe and lockers. Went with my 3 year old. He did get bored but still enjoyed walking around looking at things. Lots of seats to sit and rest. They have actual Mummy tombs with bodies inside. And old map embroidered onto a huge peice of fabric/rug. This place is huge. My husband loved it, not something I'm in to but I actually enjoyed it a little too. Very interesting.
